Award ceremony of the North-South Prize

Rania Al-Abdullah, Queen of Jordan, and Jorge Sampaio, former President of Portugal, High Representative of the United Nations for the Alliance of Civilisations, are the winners of the 2008 North-South Prize. The official award ceremony of the North-South Prize will take place in Lisbon on 16 March at the Senate Room of the Portuguese Parliament. The Prize is awarded each year to two people, one from the North and one from the South, in recognition of work protecting human rights and strengthening North-South relations. The President of Portugal Anibal Cavaco Silva, the President of the Portuguese Assembly Jaime Gama, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Lluis Maria de Puig, and the President of the North-South Centre, Claude Frey, are due to take part in the ceremony. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed former President of Portugal Mr. Jorge Sampaio as the first Special Envoy to Stop Tuberculosis (May 2006)
“In our globalizing world, to successfully combat the threat of TB, a common strategy is critical,” Dr Sampaio said in his speech, adding that it is vital for “the European Union, as well as other major organizations, like for instance the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Council of Europe, the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation and other fora join forces to address the TB epidemic and face the common threats of the emerging MDR-TB.”
